Kisumu is not just home to some of the greatest names in film and politics and sports and even music,it’s also the hub of immense creativity that doesn’t stop flowing and blessing the masses.
Some of the best artisans and creators are found by the lakeside City… A town that has seen great growth over the last decades,becoming a local entertainment and even tourism powerhouse.
But while the town produced the legendary pop duo Gidi Gidi Maji Maji,it also has churned out some of the finest names including Suzanne Owiyo and the all-time icon Lupita Nyong’o.
Big names aside… Kisumu keeps giving. And giving.
New cats have now sprung up and they’re ready to take the crown and take the reigns of leadership.
One such act is Japesa a.k.a Yellow Smile,a Kisumu phenomenon who is quickly stealing the thunder from Luodollar Vicmass even with his national hit Bank Otuch.
“Ask the city about me… Talk to the masses… Talk to the fans and the music lovers. I’ve got this city on lock down. Literally. It’s my town. Its like Biggie in New York. Tupac in Los Angeles. Kendrick in Compton. This city has accepted me… “ Japesa boasts.
And truly,it seems to be true going by the massive votes he’s been getting at the Vybe City Awards.
Nominated alongside several male acts who include the sleazy Xpat Mkwanja,Vicmass Luodollar and Kysh Roberts, Japesa says that he’s going all in and bagging the Award as only he can.
“The support I’m getting on the ground is crazy. Like,insane. I see no competition… I even have my victory speech ready. Two weeks before the gala night… ” he adds.
Oh wow.
The fight for supremacy in Kisumu has gotten even thicker and thicker with fans and artists locked in a bitter voting blitz that has seen over 6,780 votes cast for the Vybe City Awards Kisumu edition.
Well,even before October 1st 2016,which is the much-anticipated gala night ,Japesa says he has his speech ready.
Japesa,whose real name is Philip Patroba Okoyo,doesn’t seem ready to slow down. And at only 22 years old,Japesa has started a revolution quite like no other across the entire Luoland.
But he shouldn’t sit pretty,names like Ken Natel,June Rapture and Double B,plus all of the other nominees in his category,are also doing it big and gaining massive love from the ground as well.
Of all the categories,this one seems to be the most hotly-contested.
