And the Best Basketball Team in Nairobi is…

The race to the national finals of the Zuku University Basketball League (ZUBL) came to a enthralling end on Saturday.

The confident USIU ladies team took on Maseno in a heated finale that saw USIU lift the cup and take home Kshs. 150,000 for their basketball program.

The win saw USIU’s Cynthia Irankunda take home the MVP title while Hilda Indasi garnered 52 points to emerge the ladies’ top scorer at the action at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. United States Iinternational University took down Maseno in the match that ended 83-38.

Meanwhile, the University of Nairobi Terrors attacked a brilliant Mount Kenya University – Nakuru side winning by a narrow four points in the clash to take home the ZUBL men’s title. UON’s Geoffrey Ouko, who took home the ZUBL MVP and men’s top scorer award, stirred the crowd with his brilliant performance during the intense battle that saw UON lift the title, winning 72 against MKU’s 68 points.

Speaking at the event, Sports Commissioner Gordon Oluoch applauded Zuku and the Miles & Associates International for the investment in local sports and running of an impressive league.

“It is truly encouraging to see the university students exercise their talents in such engaging tournaments confirming the role of sports in this country. We urge corporates to continue investing in sports within the East African region.”

He commended the students for participating and growing their basketball talent and congratulated the winning teams.

Zuku CEO Richard Bell appreciated the efforts and commitment the university fraternity has demonstrated in making the league a success.

”The ZUBL competition has confirmed the significance of sports in Kenya and we are pleased at the opportunity to cement our presence in this growing sector,” he said, adding, “The tournament has been quite the journey and we believe the students and the respective coaches and referees have benefited from the well orchestrated six months of intensive play.”
