CNN’s Exclusive Footage reveals the ‘Panya’ Routes Used by Westgate Terrorists to Get into Kenya

More than a month after Somali militants from Al-Shabaab massacred 67 people at the Westgate Mall, CNN has exclusively established that the terrorists used alternative routes to get into the country to execute their heinous act.

CNN through its correspondent, Nima Elbagir, established that the militants branched off from government roads into ‘panya’ routes that are hacked out of the undergrowth that are used by smugglers to cross back and forth between Kenya and Somalia undetected.

‘Panya’ routes are certainly a smoother ride than the official roads and in spite of the Kenyan government’s efforts to beef up border security after the Westgate Mall attack, the CNN team comes across zero government presence as they cruise down the trail and even managed to enter Somalia from Kenya without showing any ID, without going through any checkpoints, and without going through any kind of a security process.

Nighttime is rush hour on the ‘panya’ routes as people and goods are ferried back and forth, but everyone is too afraid to stop for long even to help the stranded families the team meets along the way.
