David Rudisha Up for Role Model of the Year Award

The Mwafaka Awards take place on 1st September at the KICC from 1.00 p.m. One of the biggest awards they’re going to give out is Role Model of the Year.

One of the nominees in that category is one of the world’s greatest sportsmen, David Rudisha. The 800 metres world champion will go up against Rev Kathy Kiuna, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, soccer player Victor Wanyama and Pastor Andrew Young.

The 24-year old runner holds the world record in the 800 metres which he set at the 2012 Olympics in London. Besides that, he holds the three fastest times in history. Rudisha is also a three-time Track & Field Athlete of the Year, a distinction he only shares with American sprinting legend, Carl Lewis.

The runner’s achievements and humble nature despite great admiration from all around the world is one of the reasons he was nominated for the Mwafaka Awards. He is also one of the most inspirational role models for young people all over the world, having achieved so much at such a young age.

Thanks to a knee injury, Rudisha missed the World Championships in Moscow and will be out for most of the year. Regardless, his exploits on the track will not be forgotten, especially by his countrymen and they can find their own way to honour him: through the Mwafaka Awards.
