Firebrand Blogger Dikembe Disembe Released From Remand

Last Friday, blogger Seth Odongo was charged with hate speech in a Nairobi court and detained at the Industrial Area Prison after he failed to raise the exorbitant Ksh5 million bond or Ksh 2 million cash bail.

Seth who goes by the moniker Dikembe Disembe and blogs on Kenya Today, was accused of inciting ethnic emotions through his Facebook account. He allegedly posted a message inciting “the people of Lamu” to “remove the African colonialists”  from their lands.

After spending the weekend behind bars and receiving guests, a Nairobi Court has now revised his cash Disembe to Sh500,000 down from the initial Sh2 million.

This follows an application by a team of lawyers led by James Orengo who convinced the magistrate that the earlier amount was too high for the blogger.

Senior Principal Magistrate Anna Ndungu alternatively allowed Odongo to post a Sh2 million surety bond from the initial Sh5 million.

The case will now be mentioned on August 8.
