Following His Racist Attack in Germany, Binyavanga Wainaina Now Fears For His Safety as Hate Crimes and Racism Rise in the UK after Brexit

Renowned author and gay activist Binyavanga was recently in Berlin for one of the most prestigious fellowships in the world, Daad Fellowship.

He was there as a writer and he chronicled one of his worst experiences, how he was attacked by a German cab driver for being black.

” Clearly the taxi driver was not a patient guy. He asked me several times to hurry it, but si the meter is running, and i am paying him?

So he gets out of the car and comes across to my side, and opens the door. I am clueless what is going on because he is beating me, my bag is on the ground , we scuffle but he is stronger, I am crying now. Loud. In front of my neighbors , it is fiveissh the lady at the shop who makes it a point never to say hello to me is relishing everything, nobody comes to my aid. I feel black, dirty. I feel as if this kind of thing is supposed to happen to somebody like me. Am in Zurich writing this, on my way to see my in love.”read part of his Berlin chronicles.

 

 

The celebrated author is now expressing fear as hate crimes and racism rise in the UK following Britain’s choice to leave the European Union otherwise called the Brexit last week .

Since last Thursday foreigners have been on the receiving end of horrible attacks that have left some with grave injuries and others in fear.

Channel 4 News revealed that reports of hate crime to the police have increased by 57% since #Brexit vote compared to the previous month.

“Brexit starts to biite people. i am supposed to be in London next Month. I wonder now…” He wrote after learning of the violence people are facing after Brexit
