An employee of the United States Embassy in Nairobi was fatally shot outside a Kiambu lounge

A man employed by the US Embassy in Nairobi was fatally shot on Saturday night outside a lounge in Kiambu town. Anthony Njomo Kiunu, 35, worked as an electrician for the embassy, according to police reports.

As of the time of reporting, the embassy had not issued a statement regarding the shooting, although officials confirmed that they had been informed of the incident. According to an official familiar with the matter, Kiunu was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire during an altercation that originated inside the club.

The official indicated that there is currently no indication that Kiunu was specifically targeted in the shooting. The motive behind the altercation leading to the shooting has yet to be disclosed.

The suspect responsible for the shooting was apprehended shortly after the incident, according to the police. The nightclub’s proprietor reported the shooting to the police around 3 am.

Kiunu succumbed to his injuries after being shot in the back during the disturbance, which initially began inside the establishment and later spilled outside. Kiambu Police Commander Michael Muchiri stated that law enforcement responded promptly to the scene and initiated an investigation.

The nightclub management stated that the shooting occurred outside the premises and was captured by surveillance cameras facing the road. It remains uncertain whether the perpetrator possessed a valid firearm license.

Authorities clarified that Kiunu was not involved in the initial altercation. He sustained a gunshot wound to the back, with an exit wound on his chest. His body was transported to the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.

The firearm used in the shooting was seized for ballistic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation. Efforts have been made to regulate the possession of privately owned firearms, as there are approximately 11,000 licensed gun owners in the country.
