Ugandan President Tests Positive for COVID-19 Again, Cancels Diplomatic Trip

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time in less than a week.

In a statement on Wednesday, Museveni said he first tested positive for the virus on June 7 and has been in self-isolation since then. He said he is feeling well and has no symptoms, but he will not be traveling to Poland and Russia as planned to mediate in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Museveni said he will send Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Gen. Jeje Odongo to represent him in Poland. Odongo will then travel to Russia to meet with Russian officials.

Museveni said he will address Parliament on budget day, but he will do so from a distance of 300 meters. He said Vice President Jessica Alupo will inspect the parade and take the salute for the match past. Museveni will then deliver his remarks at the end of the budget speech.

Museveni’s reinfection comes as COVID-19 cases are rising in Uganda. The country has reported over 100,000 cases and over 3,000 deaths since the pandemic began.

Health officials have urged Ugandans to get vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. They have also urged people to wear masks and practice social distancing.
