Five-year-old in Kinyago slums dies after perhaps being poisoned by a jiko

Police are currently investigating an incident in Kinyago slums, Nairobi, where a five-year-old child died from suspected poisoning by a jiko (charcoal stove). The minor’s three siblings were found unconscious and promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention.

According to the police, the mother of the children had instructed her 21-year-old child to light a jiko and prepare their supper. She left the house for shopping around 7 pm on Tuesday and returned two hours later. Upon her return, she discovered all the children, including the 21-year-old, lying unconscious in the house.

The distressed mother raised an alarm, and neighbors rushed to her aid, transporting the four victims to the hospital. Unfortunately, the five-year-old boy was pronounced dead, while the other children were referred to Mbagathi Hospital for admission.

Upon investigation, the police concluded that the jiko was responsible for causing suffocation, the death of the minor, and injuries to the other children. An autopsy is planned on the deceased child to provide further insights into the cause of death.
