Foiled Robbery at Equity Bank: Suspects Apprehended, One Killed

A dramatic scene unfolded outside Equity Bank in Nairobi West Wednesday evening when four suspected carjackers were apprehended after stealing Sh1.5 million. In the pursuit, one suspect was shot dead, while the remaining three face court appearances today.

Police believe the gang trailed a private car from the Industrial Area before striking, breaking into the vehicle and grabbing three envelopes containing the cash. Nairobi County police chief Adamson Bungei confirmed an ongoing investigation to determine the suspects’ involvement in other robberies.

“Their arrest stemmed from quick work by police officers alerted to their activities,” Bungei explained. Officers ordered the suspects to surrender upon arrival, recovering the stolen funds during a subsequent search. The suspects, carrying crude weapons used to break into the car, were found in a Mercedes Benz with additional license plates, suggesting its use in criminal activities.

A tense situation arose as an angered mob attempted to lynch the suspects, but police managed to disperse them. Equity Bank confirmed the incident and assured customers and staff that no one was hurt during the ordeal, which resulted in the branch’s temporary closure.

This incident highlights the dangers of criminal activity and the vigilance of Kenyan law enforcement. The swift response by police officers ultimately thwarted the robbery and brought three suspects to justice. The ongoing investigation promises to uncover further details and potentially link the group to other crimes.
