Gov’t Increases Charges For IDs, Passports & Other Citizen Services

The Department of Immigration and Citizen Services has implemented updated fee structures for various services, effective since February 29, 2024.

Key Changes

  • ID cards: Obtaining a new ID card now costs Sh300, while replacing a lost one costs Sh1,000 (up from Sh100).
  • Birth and death certificates: Applications now cost Sh200 (up from Sh50). Late registrations cost Sh500 (up from Sh150).
  • Passports: New passport fees range from Sh7,500 to Sh12,500 (up from Sh4,500 to Sh7,500) depending on the number of pages. Replacing a lost passport costs Sh20,000 (up from Sh12,000).
  • Citizenship: Regaining Kenyan citizenship or renouncing it now costs Sh50,000 (previously Sh5,000 and Sh20,000 respectively). Applications for citizenship by marriage cost Sh50,000 (up from Sh5,000).
  • Permanent residence: Fees for children born outside Kenya and spouses of Kenyan citizens have increased significantly, impacting individuals from countries without dual citizenship.

The Ministry of Interior acknowledges the challenges faced by the department, including underinvestment, supplier debts, and inefficiencies. They aim to improve service delivery and address delays in issuing passports.
