Police in the US city of Lewiston, Maine, have warned residents to shelter in place after a gunman opened fire at multiple locations, killing at least 16 people and injuring at least 50 others.

The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the situation and would continue to receive updates.

Maine State Police released photos of a suspect and asked for the public’s help in identifying him.

The Central Maine Medical Center said it was reacting to a “mass casualty, mass shooter event” and was coordinating with other hospitals in the area to treat the injured.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office also released a statement, saying: “We are currently dealing with an active shooter incident in Lewiston. Please stay off the roads to allow emergency responders access to the hospitals.”
