Kajiado Women Rep Demands Action Against A Matatu Tout Who Assaulted A Female Passenger

The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has vehemently condemned the recent assault of a female passenger by a matatu tout along Thika Road and has called upon the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to swiftly implement necessary arrests and investigations.

In a resolute statement, KEWOPA chairperson and Kajiado woman representative Leah Sankaire denounced the heinous act and urged the police IG to ensure a thorough and unbiased investigation, culminating in the culprit being charged under the applicable laws.

Sankaire further implored the authorities to delve into the matatu’s operational practices, emphasizing the need to incorporate provisions for safeguarding against criminal acts, including Gender Based Violence (GBV), within the codes of conduct governing public service vehicle staff.

Addressing Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators, Sankaire firmly asserted that disagreements should never be used as an excuse to infringe upon the rights of passengers. She additionally implored PSV owners to prioritize the education of their staff on the paramount importance of respecting and protecting the rights of those who utilize their services.

“KEWOPA further calls upon the ‘BYBUSS LTD’ and the Matatu Owners Association to take immediate action to address this incident,” Sankaire declared. “This includes publishing a formal apology to the affected female passenger and the general public, as well as holding the responsible individual accountable for their actions through dismissal.”

Sankaire concluded her statement by reiterating the fundamental responsibility of service providers to ensure that all individuals are treated with respect, patience, understanding, and compassion, recognizing the equal right of every individual to utilize public services, including public transportation vehicles.

KEWOPA’s unwavering stance against this act of violence sends a powerful message that such behavior will not be tolerated. Their call for swift action from the police and the matatu industry serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect the safety and well-being of all passengers.
