kenyan Mike Ross, Brian Mwenda’s family discusses what his confinement means to them

The family of Brian Mwenda Njagi, who is facing accusations of impersonating a High Court advocate, is appealing for leniency on his behalf.

Addressing the media outside the courtroom on Wednesday, January 17th, after the proceedings, Brian’s sister Yvonne Makena spoke about a man who bears significant responsibilities.

“Brian is my brother, caring and supportive; in fact, he is our breadwinner,” she asserted.

Life for the family has been challenging since Brian gained widespread attention, with Makena acknowledging, “There were some few challenges, but we overcame. We have overcome.”

Their father has been particularly affected, “He has high blood pressure.” Brian’s father’s health deteriorated “after Brian started facing these legal challenges.”

Brian has a child in Grade 1 who resides in Meru. “Brian used to pay the child’s school fees, but now with these problems, we have tried to come together, but it’s challenging.”

Regarding Brian’s state of mind, Makena shared, “He is stressed; home is stressful.”

A high school friend joined Brian’s sister to speak to the media, highlighting their longstanding friendship.

“I have known him for so long as someone who has loved to advocate for people, he enjoys dealing with legal matters, defending others,” indicating Brian’s longstanding desire to pursue a career in law.

“He is a very good guy, not someone who gets involved in shady things. He even has a child,” the friend added.

Sammy’s prayer for his friend Brian was, “Empower him, nurture him, because nurturing him is not a complex task. But let’s not squeeze him, considering he has been in remand for 7 days now.”

Another friend, employed at Makadara Law courts, attested to Brian’s kindness to all. “Brian is a person with a pure heart. Most of the time when he left the court, he would look for us. When I heard this story, I was shocked. He used to help so many people.”
