Police capture main suspects in Benjamin Kiplagat’s grisly murder

Authorities in Eldoret have apprehended two key individuals believed to be connected to the death of an athlete discovered in a car within the town’s limits.

Moiben sub-county police chief Stephen Okal confirmed the arrests, including a local motorcycle taxi driver. He further stated that a weapon seemingly used in the incident was recovered from the suspects.

The deceased, 37-year-old Edward Kiplangat, also known as Benjamin, hailed from Elgeyo Marakwet County and was a renowned long-distance athlete specializing in the 3000m steeplechase. He had previously represented Uganda in competitions.

“Both suspects are now in custody and have been confidently identified,” stated Okal. He also acknowledged their involvement in past criminal activities, causing disruption within the region for an extended period.

While the investigation is ongoing, the initial assessment suggests the motive was not sports-related but likely a robbery, as valuables belonging to the athlete were reportedly missing.

“Our investigative efforts are expanding to ensure anyone else involved is identified and apprehended,” Okal affirmed.

Kiplangat’s body bore a significant knife wound to the neck, according to Okal.
