Kenyan authorities announced a decrease in road fatalities for 2023 compared to the previous year. Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that 3,999 people died in road accidents between January and December 7th, compared to 4,352 during the same period in 2022.

While acknowledging the positive trend, Murkomen highlighted persistent areas of concern. The number of seriously injured individuals rose significantly, prompting calls for additional safety measures. Pedal cyclist fatalities also increased, attributed to speeding, reckless cycling, and inadequate infrastructure.

“I am disheartened to report a rise in fatalities among pedal cyclists, attributed to factors such as speeding, dangerous cycling and inadequate non-motorised transport facilities,” the CS said.

The Ministry intends to tackle these challenges through several initiatives. All drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians will receive copies of the Kenya Highway Code and Learner Drivers’ Handbook to promote awareness and responsible behavior. Additionally, Murkomen emphasized the importance of individual responsibility, noting that 90% of road accidents result from unsafe user behavior.
