Acclaimed actress and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o has addressed the ongoing rumors surrounding her relationship with singer and actress Janelle Monáe.
Nyong’o, who is currently dating TV presenter Selema Masekela, has been friends with Monáe for several years. The two met at the 2014 Met Gala, shortly after Nyong’o won an Oscar for her performance in 12 Years a Slave.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Nyong’o opened up about her friendship with Monáe and why their bond has sparked speculation of a romantic involvement.
“Janelle is one of my closest friends,” Nyong’o said. “We met at the Met Gala a few years ago, and we just clicked. We have a lot in common, and we really support each other.”
Nyong’o acknowledged that Monáe is an attractive woman, and that she can understand why people might speculate about their relationship. However, she stressed that they are just friends.
“Janelle is a beautiful woman, and I can see why people might think we’re more than friends,” Nyong’o said. “But we’re not. We’re just really good friends.”
Nyong’o also said that she doesn’t mind the speculation. In fact, she finds it flattering.
“I don’t mind people thinking we’re together,” Nyong’o said. “It’s a compliment to both of us.”
Nyong’o’s comments come after years of speculation about her relationship with Monáe. The two have been photographed together on multiple occasions, and they have often praised each other in interviews. However, they have never confirmed or denied that they are more than friends.
It is clear that Nyong’o and Monáe have a close friendship. Whether or not they are romantically involved is a matter of speculation. However, one thing is for sure: they are both talented and successful women who are an inspiration to many.
