The method used to re-arrest fugitive Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe in Ngong

Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe, wanted in the United States for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, spent the night at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road.

Arrested at 11 pm on February 13 by officers from Ngong Police Station, Kang’ethe was apprehended at the home of a relative, his cousin, following a tip-off. The arrest took place in Ngong, Kajiado County.

Kang’ethe had been evading US authorities since October 31, 2023, when he allegedly killed Margaret Mbitu before fleeing to Kenya. Leaving Mbitu’s body in his car at Boston Logan International Airport, he boarded a plane to Kenya.

Nairobi County police boss Adamson Bungei confirmed Kang’ethe’s re-arrest and expressed gratitude for the public assistance. After his arrest in Ngong, he was taken to Ngong Police Station before being transferred to the DCI headquarters. A team of six top-of-the-range vehicles accompanied the suspect during the transit.

The multi-agency team, including plainclothes officers, traced Kang’ethe’s phone signals to various locations before his arrest. On January 30, 2024, he was initially detained in Westlands Sub-County pending a ruling on his potential extradition to face a first-degree murder charge in the US.

Under Kenyan law, escaping lawful custody constitutes a misdemeanor, and no appeal is allowed in such cases.
