The Star newspaper set for retrenchment of staff

An anonymous Ghafla fan has approached us with information alleging that The Star newspaper will be undertaking a retrenchment drive. This follows a recent retrenchment drive (described as a restructuring) that saw them shut down Kiss TV.

According to our source, the media house has not been able to pay their grassroots correspondents for over 7 months but when we did a little digging, we learnt that the Star paid up 2 months’ worth of salaries for the same.

Radio too was not left unscathed as the company had to let go of a few staff on their side just after the month of April began. It remains to be seen whether or not the company will be able to adapt to the changing tides in media and whether they will get the digital capitalization right especially with the mushrooming of smaller, more efficient teams.

It had previously been suggested that they would do away with their print arm of the business entirely and go “digital first” on all matters. But it remains to be seen whether or not that is what is going to happen.
