Trump arrested in Atlanta, historic mugshot released
Former US President Donald Trump surrendered to authorities in Georgia on Thursday on charges of plotting to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.
Trump, who was accompanied by his lawyer, was booked at the Fulton County Jail and released on bail after posting a $200,000 bond. He is the first former or serving US president to be indicted.
The charges against Trump stem from his efforts to pressure Georgia officials to “find” enough votes to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the state. In a phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, Trump repeatedly asked Raffensperger to “find” 11,780 votes, which would have been enough to change the outcome of the election.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has accused the charges against him of being politically motivated. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 23.
The indictment against Trump is the latest in a series of legal challenges he faces. He is also facing criminal charges in New York and New Jersey.
