Kenyan Artists Neglected, Says Amani

The Kenyan music sensation is raged by the amount of airtime given to Kenyan artists on national broadcasters, saying it’s a let down by those supposed to nurture home grown talent.

The Kenyan media is allowed to play up to 60% of local music but according to Amani, this is not adhered to, something that is not going down well with the local artists.

She further says that pop music is ruling the airwaves more than the other genres. She alludes that most Kenyan artists do not do pop music and that gives room for foreign artists to dominate the airwaves because that’s what Kenyan media subscribe to.

According to her, Kenyan artists are recognised outside than they are at home and that’s why they get more nominations for various awards than artists from Tanzania and Uganda. Amani urges Kenya to borrow from Tanzania and Uganda who give their artists platforms to flourish.

However, she doesn’t lay the entire blame on the Kenyan media. She challenges programme controllers to do enough research on local music to help promote local talent.
