Kenyan Hip Hop Artist Girongi Tells off Kenyan Music Industry

Kenyan hip hop artist Girongi has castigated the local music industry for not giving him an opportunity and sidelinng him saying since his first song got banned no one wants to play his music.

After the release of his song “Fyatua” the government banned it due to what was termed as vile lyrics such as “shoot makarao”. In his defence, Girongi told Vibeweekly he was misunderstood and was just to trying to expose the ills committed by rogue cops.

G.rongi is a Kenyan hip hop artist as well as an urban activist raised in Dandora. He started rapping in the year 2000 as a member of Wenyeji. Then he went solo and started working on his own projects, he became popular with Fyatua ( also known as Fear Tour) in 2006. He has performed in several countries like South Africa, India, Norway, France, Tanzania.  His debut album Njaraw was released in 2011.

The album addressed social injustice, art of hip hop, class struggle, poverty, religion, government, imperialism and tribalism. Most of his lyrics focus on controversial issues in global politics and pan African issue. His music is mostly in Swahili, sheng and Kikuyu language. His style is influenced by hip hop, traditional African music and reggae.

He has been involved in  kilio cha haki  “ a cry for justice” project  (an album realized by 38 artists from across the Eastlands ) and UN  ( United Nation) peace project during post electoral violence 2008  Umoja ‘unity’ Song Kenyan Artists United.
He is part of Ukoo Flani Mau Mau Trust.

He has been involved in several development and peace projects in Kenya: Kenyan Artists United (UN project), Mathare Youth Sport Association (MYSA), Kwani Trust (Kenyan based literary network dedicated to developing quality creative writing), Maono Cultural group and Cultural Film Foundation, Nyumbani Children homes. He will be releasing his new video at Tribeka lounge at Willy M Tuva’s Wakilisha East Africa.
