A final tribute to Akhumzi Jezile was held in Rhema Bible Church. This saw friends and family alike converge for this final journey.

Among the speakers who paid tribute to him were Noxolo Grootboom and Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa. His friend  Dr Musa Mthombeni, a colleague Sjula Mkhize and Andile Ncube were also in attendance. They delivered a moving tribute on behalf of Akhumzi’s mother.

“I have cried for you my child.

“I have cried to God and have asked him, why me? Why you? A mother’s cry to God. No other feeling can possibly be worse than this,”his mother said in her tribute.

Jezile was then buried at the West Park Cemetery.

Fologi was overcome with emotion as he reflected on the TV star’s last few days with them.

Fologi recalled how Akhumzi told them last Friday that instead of traveling to the Eastern Cape by plane‚ he would take a road trip with his friends.

He said that there was a ceremony at home on Saturday and their mom asked Akhumzi to bring scones and biscuits.

However‚ on the Saturday morning they received the dreaded phone call about the accident and was faced with the most difficult task of identifying Akhumzi.

“A truck carrying a car went into them. They managed to escape it but the trailer went after them. Cutting the top of their car. They all died immediately.”

Fologi said it was devastating to identify Akhumzi’s body.  “I didn’t recognise my beloved son. I had to go in and check for him closely”.

Akhumzi Jezile’s memorial service will be held on Thursday.

The TV presenter died on Saturday morning following an accident that killed the lives of five, including Siyasanga Kobese and Thobani Mseleni.

Jezile’s memorial service has been organized by key players in the entertainment industry, with permission from his family.

“We are humbled by the continued outpouring love, support and prayers we have received to date from all corners of those that were touched by his life. Even though we are still dealing with the shock of the loss of our son and brother; the family is comforted by the knowledge that Akhumzi loved the Lord and was unashamed of the gospel of Christ. We would like to thank everyone for the support, and further request that you continue to pray for us and afford us the space that we so desperately need in our time of grief,” family spokesperson Percy Vilakazi said in the statement.

A separate memorial will be held by Urban Brew Studios at a later date.
