Victor Wanyama, Sonko, Rudisha & More Go Head-to-Head at Mwafaka Awards

When Victor Wanyama left Celtic and signed for Southampton, Kenya became the 100th country to have a player in the English Premier League.

By playing for the elite league, he becomes the most accomplished soccer player to come out of the country. Rumors of a few more Kenyans joining the EPL (including his brother, MacDonald Mariga) have spread over the years but he becomes the first player to play in the elite league, considered the best in the world.

That achievement plus his previous exploits as the top player in his previous club are the reasons the superstar is one of the nominees at this year’s Mwafaka Awards in the Role Model of the Year category. At 22, he is the youngest nominee.

Wanyama, who historically helped Celtic beat football giants Barcelona last year will compete with runner David Rudisha, Rev Kathy Kiuna, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko and Pastor Andrew Young.

The awards show will take place on the 1st of September, 2013 at the KICC. The red carpet will be open from 1.00 p.m., while the doors will be closed at 3.00 p.m. Advance tickets will be going for Kshs. 250 and Kshs. 300 at the gate. For bookings, call 0728 384 937.
