Wales skipper Warburton to miss Springbok Test

Wales captain Sam Warburton will miss Saturday’s international against South Africa in Cardiff, the Welsh Rugby Union announced Thursday.
A WRU statement said Warburton had “picked up an injury in training on Tuesday”.
His place at blindside flanker for Wales’s final Test of 2016 will be taken by Dan Lydiate in the only change to the side that beat Argentina a fortnight ago.
Meanwhile experienced centre Jamie Roberts has been dropped to the bench for the second time in three Tests, with his place taken by Scott Williams.
Several players who missed the last-gasp win over Japan have been recalled, including wing George North, fly-half Dan Biggar and lock Luke Charteris.
Veteran prop Gethin Jenkins will captain the side in Warburton’s absence.
Bath No 8 Taulupe Faletau is back on the bench after playing less than an hour of competitive rugby since suffering a knee ligament injury in September.
In the backs, Leigh Halfpenny and Liam Williams have again swapped positions, with Toulon’s Halfpenny reverting to fullback and Williams, linked with a move to English and European champions Saracens, on the wing.
Under-pressure interim Wales coach Rob Howley, guiding the team while Warren Gatland is seconded to the British and Irish Lions, said Warburton had “picked up a bit of a stinger” injury, a blow which normally affects the neck and shoulder area.
“We’ve made just one change in the back-row,” Howley added.
“Sam picked up a bit of a stinger injury on Tuesday and isn’t quite ready, so Dan comes in. Dan played particularly well against Japan, so we are pleased he gets the opportunity again.”
Saturday’s international at the Principality Stadium is a key match for both sides.
Wales were heavily criticised after needing a Sam Davies drop-goal in the dying seconds to beat Japan 33-30, while South Africa faced even greater flak after suffering a first-ever defeat by Italy, going down 20-18.
“We were pleased with the win against Argentina (Wales beat the Pumas 24-20 12 days ago) so have gone with virtually the same team for South Africa,” explained Howley.
“It’s good to have Taulupe back in the squad. He will add a good impact from the bench.
“And we are delighted with Sam (Davies). He showed individual composure and accuracy last weekend, and he gets another opportunity on the bench.”
Former Wales and Lions scrum-half Howley added: “There is the tinge of disappointment in terms of performance against Japan, and we want to put that right.
“Not only are we looking to win this weekend, we want a performance to go with it.”
Wales have only beaten South Africa twice in 31 attempts, although they defeated the Springboks 12-6 in their last Cardiff encounter two years ago.
South Africa were due to name their side later on Thursday.
