What Chameleone’s Imminent Relocation To Kenya Means For The Kenyan Music Industry

When he threatened to relocate to Kenya because this is the only place he feels he is highly valued, nobody took Jose Chameleone seriously. It was until the other day when reports surfaced that the Ugandan maestro had been spotted in Westlands looking for a house to buy that we came to realize how serious he was.

Uganda has become hostile to him. According to Chameleone, the media in Uganda is intolerant to his success. This coupled with the mysterious death of his younger brother singer AK 47, the veteran heartthrob feels it is time he bid Uganda bye and relocate to Kenya.

In fact if you did not know it was in Kenya that Chameleone learnt Swahili and released his first songs. From the very first day he was smuggled into the country, Kenyans proved the ideal hosts for the singer. According to him, he finds a lot of love here than in his native Uganda.

Chameleone is always welcome to be part of us. We love vistors by the way and Kenya could offer him the best environment to take his music a notch higher.

But what does Chameleone’s imminent relocation to the 254 mean for the Kenyan music industry? Well, there is a lot depending on how you tackle this question. It is an open-ended one and answers depend on the weaknesses and strengths you see in our confines.

To try and demystify this broad yet necessary question, I will entirely rely on what I have seen in our music ever since I joined Ghafla to write about entertainment.

For a long time, Kenyans have been overlooked by other established East African artistes when it comes to collabos. I mean the likes of Chameleone himself, Tanzania’s Diamond among several others.

This perhaps is because of the kind of music Kenyan artistes produce. Some would argue it is totally different and unique while another clique of critics would say it is hogwash. Pathetic to be precise. Bunkum to say the least.

But I digress from the latter and embark on the former. I don’t want to look like I am castigating our artistes when they have toiled and moiled to at least release something for the audience.

Jose’s relocation is the best opportunity to do collabos with Kenyan artistes. This is the only opportunity Kenyan artistes have to benefit from Chameleone’s majestic abilities and do massive collabos that will shake East Africa. I know Chameleone is not a bad guy. Having discovered his music talent in Kenya, Jose would want to return the favours I believe. So we expect many collabos when he finally lands in Kenya as a resident.

The imminent relocation of Jose to Kenya is also an opportunity for Kenyan artistes to go back to class and learn. They should learn why, apart from being talented, Jose has managed to release more than two hits year in year out. Every song he does is a hit. Ask Maina Kageni he will assure this to you.

They should ask him the secret behind his success and learn from him to do better than they are doing currently. This is a golden opportunity they have to stop being hogwash and hokum.

Finally, Jose’s relocation should already be sending jitters down the spines of pathetic Kenyan artistes. They should be worried that real competition is coming to the 254. In fact it is around the corner. Figure out this, when he is in Uganda, Jose’s music is highly regarded in Kenya. So what will be the outcome when he moves in? Below bar artistes will be completely phased out. They will literally die. And there will never be a comeback for them.

It is time we learnt. It is time we wake up from slumber and do real shit. Real shit sells people. Real shit propels. Real shit builds. Jose is here to show you how real shit is done.
