Donald Trump’s immigration reforms is threatening ‘dreamers’ who moved to US looking for better life. Lupita Nyong’o delivered a powerful speech for dreamers during Sunday’s Oscar/Academy Awards.
Trump in September announced he was disbanding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) ― which protects undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.
The US president demands that any protections for dreamers come with funding for a border wall, the suspension of the visa lottery program and an end to family reunification policies.
Hope for dreamers
Lupita Nyong’o fought for the rights of dreamers while presenting Oscar Awards. She used the opportunity to voice support for undocumented migrants who arrived in the USA as children.
Lupita was born in Mexico and later on moved to US to pursue her passion – acting. She among immigrants who made it big in America.
“We are the two actors you keep hearing about but whose names you have trouble pronouncing. Like everyone in this room and everyone watching at home, we are dreamers. We grew up dreaming of one day working in the movies, dreams are the foundation of America,” said Lupita Nyong’o while presenting Oscar Award together with Pakistani-American stand-up comedian/actor Kumail Nanjiani.
