Fresh twists in Tecra Karanja’s murder probe

Investigations into the alleged murder of Keroche Breweries’ heiress, Tecra Karanja in May, have taken fresh twists following recent developments.

In a bid to get justice for the murder of her young daughter, Tabitha Karanja filed an application to have an inquest into the murder case, done in Nairobi.

The battle

In the company of her husband at the Milimani courts, the mourning mother through an affidavit, was surprised by the DPP’s decision to move the inquest proceedings from Milimani to Lamu.

Something she outrightly declined, terming the decision as “whimsical and arbitrary”. Thereafter, raising suspicions and doubts that the DPP was acting in good will and without influence from third parties.

“My daughter’s death us the most painful experience for me as a parent. We allowed the authorities to investigate and punish the crime but a number of things have happened which have made us lose faith in the DPP,” asserted Tabitha.

Plus, according to her, moving the inquest to Lamu, simply meant, that the key suspect in the murder case, Tecra’s boyfriend, Omar Lali would have influence over it.

Citing Lali’s massive influence in the Coastal region especially among boat owners, operators and beach boys, who she did not quite trust.

“There is real and well-founded fear in our family that we may not travel to and from Lamu islands to attend and participate in the inquest proceedings at Lamu, without significant threat to our life and safety,” stated Tabitha.

In the latest updates, the inquest into Tecra death is set to proceed after a Nairobi court dismissed attempts by the prosecution to block her mother from filing evidence in the case.

2 weeks after Omar Lali was warmly received back home after being set free, the Law is still on his case following a recent court decision.

The same court which set him free on bond has agreed to give 30 more days to allow for conclusion of police investigations into the controversial case.

A decision agreed upon by Lamu principal magistrate Allan Temba, Omar´s lawyer Yusuf Aboubakar alongside the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) during a live video link session on Wednesday, June 10.

However, Mr Lali has been spared from detention during the 30-day period of which police investigations will be ongoing.

Just last week, DCI boss George Kinoti indicated there was evidence that proved Tecra´s death was murder.

We have enough evidence to prove that it was murder.

An autopsy report revealed Tecra succumbed to injuries sustained on the left side of her head.

Wednesday, May 27, the Lamu Court released the 54-year old family man on a KSh 300,000 bond and two sureties.

A decision principal magistrate, Allan Temba arrived at amidst ongoing police investigations after no evidence proved him guilty.

This came after the Lamu native was arrested on Tuesday, May 5 and held in detention for 21 days in what police termed ´comprehensive investigations´ that did not need interference.

Tuesday, May 26, marked exactly 21 days of Omar Lali behind bars after which the Judge found no reason to detain him further.

Omar Lali became a household name following the fatal fall of Keroche´s youngest heiress, Tecra Karanja who was his girlfriend.

Tecra was laid to rest on Saturday, May 16 in a private burial in Naivasha.
