14-year-old girl who scored 401 marks in KCPE ends up being a maid for lack of school fees

Poverty can be so cruel at times. A 14-year-old girl has been forced to ditch her dream of becoming a surgeon because her mother can’t afford to pay her school fees.

Mediatrix Ngai sat for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination in 2017 at Musoli Primary School in Ikolomani constituency.

She scored 401 marks and was called to join Chepterit Girls High School in Nandi County. Mediatrix was turned away on reporting day despite having deposited Kes 10,000 in the school account.

The 14-year-old has since opted to become a househelp to assist her mother make ends meet. Her mom normally moves from one house to another in Upper Hill estate in Nairobi looking for menial jobs to do.

Mediatrix’s mother says the man with whom she sired her daughter vanished the moment she announced she was pregnant.
