Nuru Okanga Charged With Publishing False Information About President Ruto

Nuru Okanga, a staunch supporter of Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, was charged on Thursday, November 30, 2023, with publishing false information about President William Ruto. Okanga, who appeared before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecution alleges that Okanga published a controversial video about President Ruto on his YouTube channel, Riba News@ribanews. The charge sheet states that Okanga intentionally published false statements on November 20, 2023, aimed at tarnishing the President’s reputation.

The die hard Azimio supporter urged the court to release him on bail, promising to adhere to any conditions imposed. The magistrate set bail at Ksh10,000.

Okanga’s arrest and prosecution stem from a recommendation by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) following his apprehension by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers on Wednesday.

Okanga has been in the spotlight since the release of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results last week. The vocal political activist, who is vying for the Kholera ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat, was among the candidates who took the KCPE exams, and many Kenyans were eager to learn his performance.

Okanga has remained evasive about his KCPE results, leading some netizens to suspect that he may not have performed as well as he had led them to believe.
