Tahidi High actress opens up about life as a disabled child and why her mum was punished for it

Actress Kellen also known as Joyce Wanjiku has a disabled leg that was caused by a wrong injection when she was only 6 years old.

Speaking about life as a disabled back in the day; Kellen went on to reveal that her situation forced her family to reject her without a second thought. According to the lass, both her mum’s and dad’s families refused to have anything to do with her after the incident.

Having been born in a family where the father came from Tanzania and the mother Kenyan; no one wanted to be blamed for the illness that had befallen their daughter. Ms Kellen who seems to have had it rough growing up in such an environment went on to open up saying:

They started fighting and quarreling because of my sickness, claiming it was a curse from either family. My father would beat my mum so much, saying, ‘Esther chukua kilema chako upeleke nyumbani Kenya’.

Mistreated

Being the child with ‘special needs’ Kellen went on to reveal how they mistreated her without a care in the world. According to the lady at times she was forced to sleep on the floor.

I was mistreated and would sleep on the floor

As if she was born to suffer, Kellen says her parents parted ways during the Kagera war involving Tanzania and Uganda.

At this point there was no option but to head back to Kenya however her mother could not manage handling all the kids. Kellen says since they had to walk for miles, her mum was forced to leave her behind as she saved herself.

Days, weeks and months went by without anyone coming to look or claim her. The government however stepped in and put her in a children’s home where she later learnt to accept as her home.
