Kenya’s Deployment Of Police Officers To Haiti Put On Hold Following Political Turmoil

Kenya’s deployment of police officers to Haiti has been put on hold following the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry on March 12th.

Reason for Delay

Lack of Stable Government- Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei stated that without an established government in Haiti, there’s no functioning authority for deployed forces to collaborate with.

“There has been a fundamental change in the circumstances as a result of the resignation of the PM. Without a political administration in Haiti, there is no anchor on which a police deployment can rest, hence the government of Kenya will await the installation of a new constitutional authority in Haiti, before taking further decisions on the matter. Kenya reiterates commitment to providing leadership to the multinational security support,” the PS said in an interview with BBC.

Kenya is committed to contributing to the international security effort in Haiti. The government will wait for the appointment of a new Haitian administration before making further decisions regarding deployment. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki had earlier indicated preparations for troop deployment were progressing smoothly. Rumors about officer withdrawal due to escalating violence were dismissed by CS Kindiki.

Prime Minister Henry’s resignation came amidst pressure from neighboring countries, the US, and internal rebel groups.

Kenya was slated to contribute 1,000 police officers as part of a UN-authorized mission.

Overall, Kenya’s deployment to Haiti is currently on hold due to the recent political upheaval in the Caribbean nation.

Police Officer Shoots 15-Year-Old Boy in Ngong Town

A 15-year-old boy was shot by a police officer in Ngong Town, Kajiado County, while the officer was trying to stop a mob from lynching a suspect.

According to witnesses, the suspect had been chased and cornered by a mob after he allegedly stabbed another man in Mathare area of the town. The suspect tried to escape, and the mob attacked him with stones and sticks.

A police officer on patrol intervened to save the suspect and fired one round from his AK47 rifle. The bullet hit the 15-year-old boy, flooring him as the mob dispersed.

The suspect, the boy, and the stabbing victim were taken to the hospital. The suspect was treated and discharged, while the boy and the stabbing victim were referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for further treatment.

The police officer was disarmed and arrested. Police said they plan to charge him in court over the shooting.

Man Shot in Lowangila Area

Police in Meru are investigating the shooting of a man in Lowangila area.

Police who were on patrol heard a gunshot and went to check the scene. They found that one David Changi Ngala, aged 20, had been shot in the left knee by an unknown gang armed with rifles while opening the door of his house.

Ngala was taken to Isiolo County Referral Hospital, where he was admitted in fair condition.

The motive of the shooting is not known. Police say they have intensified operations in the area, which is prone to cattle rustlers’ attacks.

Foreigners arrested with cocaine

A multi-agency team arrested four foreigners and one Kenyan in Kitengela for possession of cocaine.

The team, consisting of regular police officers and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), raided the suspects’ apartment in Beckvike Homes in the early hours of Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

The four foreigners were identified as Ali Abubakar, Mohammed Kassim, Saad Salim, and Rosse Paul Tito. The Kenyan suspect was named Nancy Munyota.

A search of the apartment revealed 143 pellets of cocaine stashed in empty packets of fruit juice. The detectives also recovered digital weighing machines, $245 USD, Ksh26,100, Tsh11,000, Indian Rupees, and mobile phones.

The locals in the area had raised concerns about the suspects’ activities, and the police were tipped off about their drug trafficking operation.

This is not the first time that the DCI has arrested suspects in connection with drug trafficking. In August 2023, the sleuths arrested a businesswoman known as Nancy Kigunzu, popularly known as “Mathe wa Ngara”, for her alleged involvement in a drugs haul in Ngara, Nairobi.

Kigunzu was denied bail and is currently being held at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) police post.

The arrests of the suspects in Kitengela and Kigunzu are a clear indication that the DCI is committed to cracking down on drug trafficking in Kenya.

Notorious Eastlands gangster shot and arrested by police

A wanted murder suspect was shot and injured in a dramatic chase in Umoja, Nairobi, on Monday evening.

The suspect, who was armed with a gas cylinder and a matchbox, was confronted by police but refused to surrender. He was shot in the leg and arrested as he tried to escape towards Donholm.

Two police officers were also injured during the incident. One officer complained of pain in the jaw and the other in the hand.

The suspect is being treated in hospital under police guard and is expected to be charged with murder.

In a separate incident, a man was shot and injured in the leg during a robbery in Bondeni, Ngong, Kajiado County.

The victim was waiting for the gate to be opened when two gunmen approached him. The gang ordered him to alight from his car, prompting a confrontation that left him with a bullet wound in the left leg.

The gang stole Sh7,000 and the victim’s mobile phone before escaping into the darkness.

Police are looking for the gang and have increased their presence in the area.

The two incidents highlight the need for vigilance and caution, especially at night. If you see something suspicious, report it to the police immediately.

Kasarani Police Station under scrutiny again: Inspector demanded bribe from pregnant woman before releasing her

A police inspector in Kasarani Division has been charged with bribery. The officer, who has not been named, was arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on July 27, 2023, for allegedly demanding a bribe from a complainant in order to release his pregnant girlfriend who had been arrested and detained at Kasarani Police Station.

The inspector was arraigned in court on July 28, 2023, and pleaded not guilty to the charges. She was released on a cash bail of Sh300,000 or a bond of Sh500,000 with a surety of the same amount. The case will be mentioned on August 22, 2023.

The inspector failed to show up in court for plea-taking on July 28, 2023. Instead, her lawyer informed the court that she had fallen ill and applied to defer the plea for two weeks. The court granted the application and ordered that the matter proceeds on August 9, 2023.

The inspector’s arrest is a reminder that corruption is a serious problem in Kenya. It is important for law enforcement officers to uphold the law and to not engage in corrupt practices. The EACC’s investigation and prosecution of this case is a step in the right direction in the fight against corruption.

Poice chase leads in mystery death of Nigerian at Kileleshwa AirBNB

Police in Nairobi are investigating the death of a Nigerian man who died in his Airbnb rental.

John Obas Isokpehi, 44, had been staying in the room along Kindaruma Road for a week before he died on Saturday afternoon.

Police said Isokpehi had called the owner of the room to say he was feeling unwell. The owner found him unresponsive and took him to hospital, where he died.

Preliminary findings suggest that Isokpehi died of high blood pressure. His body has been moved to the mortuary pending further autopsy and investigation.

In a separate incident, a man died at a sand harvesting site in Athi River.

Kyalo Juma, 26, was trapped in a cave where workers had excavated sand on July 29. His body was discovered in the cave, having been hit and covered with rocks and sand.

Police suspect that the cave walls collapsed, causing Juma’s death. They are investigating the incident.

The caves have been dug deeper to enable harvesting of sand from the area. This has raised concerns about the environmental impact of sand harvesting.

Both incidents are under investigation.

Police Officer Faces Disciplinary Action for TikTok Video

A police officer who posted a video on TikTok in which he made political remarks is facing disciplinary action.

The officer, who has not been named, was seen in the video reading comments from his followers about the current administration of President William Ruto and the ongoing protests.

“Zakayo must go, Ruto must go… imagine kila mtu anasema Ruto must go… mimi ni comments nasoma tu (everyone is saying Ruto must go… I’m just reading comments),” the officer says in the clip.

Some of the phrases used by the officer, who was with a colleague, are used by Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition in their anti-government protests.

The policeman is also heard saying that “dialogue is the only solution and it must come immediately.”

The National Police Service has condemned the officer for making misleading and reckless remarks.

“As a Disciplined Service, we wish to clarify and assure the public that the behaviour portrayed in the clip is not only unacceptable but also doesn’t reflect the values of NPS,” a statement from the National Police Service reads.

The police termed the officer’s remarks as regrettable and that they have embarked on an internal review with a view of preferring appropriate disciplinary action.

The National Police Service also said it remains focused on training its officers to the highest standards.

This development comes at the height of anti-government protests by Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition.

The third wave of demonstration by the opposition coalition started on Wednesday in several parts of the country and will continue on Thursday up to Friday.

On Wednesday, Nairobi’s CBD remained calm but it was deserted as business people and traders failed to show up for fear of being caught up in the protests.

The officer’s actions have been condemned by Kenyans on social media, who have called for him to be dismissed from the police force.

It remains to be seen what disciplinary action will be taken against the officer, but his actions have highlighted the need for police officers to be more careful about what they say and do in public.

Court Suspends IG Koome’s Promotion of 514 Police Officers

The Labour Court has suspended the promotion of 514 police officers by Inspector General of Police (IG) Japheth Koome. The decision was made on Thursday, June 23, 2023, pending the outcome of an appeal contesting the legality of the promotions.

The appeal was filed by Senator Okiya Omtatah and activist Michael Otieno, who argue that the promotions were unlawful. They claim that Koome does not have the authority to promote police officers above the rank of superintendent, and that the promotions were made without the approval of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC).

In his ruling, Justice Byram Ongaya said that he was suspending the promotions “in the interest of justice.” He ordered the NPSC to convene a meeting of all parties involved in the case to try to resolve the dispute.

The case will be mentioned again on June 29, 2023.

The promotions were announced by Koome on June 5, 2023. They saw a number of senior police officers, including General Service Unit Commandant Eliud Lagat, Deputy Director of DCI Nicholas Kamwende, and head of Investigations at DCI Abdallah Komesha, promoted to the rank of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police.

The promotions have been met with criticism from some quarters. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has said that Koome’s actions amount to a “serious violation” of the Constitution and the NPS Act. The LSK has also called for Koome’s removal from office.

It remains to be seen whether the court will uphold the promotions or order them to be rescinded. However, the suspension of the promotions is a significant development in the case, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Police successfully ambush 5 carjackers

Kericho, Kenya – May 22, 2023 – Police officers from Kipsitet Police Station in Kericho County on Sunday, May 21, saved a trader from losing goods he imported from Tanzania and destined for Busia.

The attempted robbery with violence took place along the Muhoroni-Kipsitet road in the Bangla area.

According to a police report, five armed gangsters hijacked a Mitsubishi Fuso vehicle that was transporting farm produce from Tanzania to Busia. The gangsters cut the rear canvas of the vehicle and were offloading the goods when they were confronted by police officers who were on patrol.

The officers quickly swung into action and arrested the five gangsters. The goods that were being stolen were recovered and returned to the trader.

The trader, who has not been named, thanked the police for their quick response and for saving his goods. He said that he would have lost a lot of money if the police had not intervened.

The police have urged members of the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. They have also warned criminals that they will be dealt with swiftly and firmly.

Mozzart supports the Kenya Police force with a donation of PPE’s worth Ksh 4 Million

Helping Kenya’s healthcare system has been a priority in Mozzart’s socially responsible work in recent months.

But, the goal of these actions is not only to improve working conditions of health workers, but also to establish support for the entire community.

Leading gaming company Mozzart donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) worth Ksh 4 Million to the Kenya Police on Tuesday 30 March.

The donated equipment included isolation gowns, nitrile powder free gloves, shoe covers, 3ply face masks with shields, 3ply protective face masks and disposable bags.

At hand to receive the donation was Mr. Nyale Munga, the Principal Assistant to the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai who thanked Mozzart.

“On behalf of the Inspector General and Kenya Police, I would like to thank Mozzart and we hope this is the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership” He said.

Mozzart Country Director Mr. Sasa Krneta thanked the Kenya Police for serving the country even in the midst of the dangerous Coronavirus pandemic and reiterated the company’s commitment to helping Kenyan communities.

“We appreciate with gratitude the exceptional work the Police Service are doing in the country to ensure there’s peace and safety for everyone. Mozzart is very delighted to donate PPES to the Police in this exceptionally hard times,” he said.

“We hope these PPEs will aid in reducing the spread of the virus. The aim is to protect them (police) and the public in the fight against COVID-19 and to combat the spread,” he added.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Mozzart has invested over Ksh 60 million in the fight against Coronavirus by donating vital medical equipment to more than 30 hospitals around the country.

The donations included hospital beds, bed side lockers, patient monitors, oxygen concentrators, surgical masks, infant phototherapy machines, infant incubators amongst others.

The company also launched the “100 Wells for our communities” project that is aimed at delivering clean water to various communities around the country.
