Conflict solved

Mama Oliech’s eldest son Nickson Onywanda has come out to clear the air on the family tussle which threatened to delay the burial.

Onywanda confirmed that there were disagreements in burial dates but asserts that the family has since solved the issue and agreed to bury the deceased on on 11th August.

“Yes it is true there were differences in burial dates, but it all comes to one thing that she is our mother. One group wanted one date for their own reasons the other date also for different reasons. There was no unanimous decision on when to lay to rest our mother.

“So, one group placed an advert on the paper and the other followed suit. I cannot stop anyone from doing it. I understand why there is confusion but we as the family sat down with the elders and ironed out issues. They stated that a decision will be ultimately made by the eldest son, which is me. I chose 11th where the majority had decided,” said Nickson Onywanda in an interview with SDE.

Simmering family tussle? Two conflicting obituaries for Mama Oliech raise eyebrows

Dennis Oliech’s mother Mama Mary Auma died on July 20th 2018. Almost three weeks have passed since she died and the family appears not have agreed on the date of burial.

Mama Oliech succumbed to cancer, she was first diagnosed with cancer way back in 2013. She developed breathing complications at her home in Lavington and passed on while being rushed to the hospital.

The family has placed two conflicting obituaries for the deceased which were all published on Daily Nation on Tuesday 7th August 2018.

Family tussle

The first obituary which appears on page 45 of Daily Nation indicates that Mama Oliech’s burial will be held on August 18th 2018 at the family home in Ratta-Seme, Kisumu county.

The second obituary which appears on page 46 of Daily Nation indicates that the deceased will be ferried home on the night of August 9th, 2018 for arrival at the family home on August 10th  – which is presumably the burial date.

Nairobi News reports that one of Mama Oliech’s daughters and sons showed up at Nation Center and insisted that each of the two obituaries must be published separately and at the same time.

“It is just a rumor with no truth in it, he is not broke. We’ve been embarrassed and hurt. He is a national hero. National heroes deserve a lot of respect. Dragging their names through the mud is wrong.”

She went on to add,

“He has helped us whenever he can when it comes to family projects. However, all his siblings are stable and have families and jobs of their own. When I was battling Lymphoma Cancer, he played a big role in making sure I got well. He found a doctor in France who treated me from 2013 to 2016.He spent huge amounts of money. Now I am well, I just attend physiotherapy. Also, he supported me to open a second branch of Mama Oliech and a pub at Dagoretti Centre.”

It is however sad to see how Mama Oliech looks hurt because of online bullies!
