For a long time Kenyans have loved west African movies and English movies from the west. However as time continues to go by, so is the entertainment industry in Kenya and boy have we come from far.

Back in the day we had the likes of Mama Kayai and Nyasuguta representing the faces of actress in the country; but now, there are a few bad and bougie actresses who have undeniably spiced up the movie industry for us.

5. Bridget Shighadi

Actress Bridget Shighadi who is married to Nick Mutuma has been doing quite well in the entertainment industry. So far she has landed a few roles on major TV shows and judging how she her delivers her role as Sofia on TV show Maria; lets just say that she took too much tie before embarking on this new journey!

4. Yasmeen Saiedi (Maria)

Judging from how Kenyans adore her; Yasmeen Saiedi popularly known as Maria was undeniably born for TV life. She has been able to connect with many throw the popular show; and so far, most actresses who have been in the industry cannot match up to her talent. She’s a star and a beautiful one!

The petite Brenda Wairimu has been dominating the entertainment industry for years now. For some reason I believe that her talent has been underrated but truth is; Brenda is amazing actress who delivers in ways we cannot even explain in plain words.

Mrs Phil Karanja owns the entertainment industry! Thanks to her remarkable talent, most fans will tell you that Kate actress was born to be an actress. She can be cheeky and serious at the same; however I cannot deny that we love the ‘hood’ type vibe she gives on most of her movies and shows!

Thanks to TV show Sue and Johnnie the lovely Teshna was able to showcase her talent that kept many glued to their TV stations. I mean, she is an exotic lady with a classy vibe; but at the same time a ghetto girl. Although she seemsto have taken a break from the Kenyan entertainment industry; Serah’s talent was a clear indication that she will one day run the entertainment industry.

Kenyan sassy actress, Brenda Wairimu wears many hats which have seen her scale the heights and bag multiple awards but this she achieved after hitting rock bottom.

The dashing beauty recently scooped two awards: LIPFF 2019 Best Actress – Kenya and WFA 2020 Best Actress.

However, it was through her agonies at the time, that she became so influential in the acting field.

You know how they say artists perform their best, when they are at their worst?
These trophies mean a lot to me, its taken almost a decade to get here…and its true, when my personal life was at its worst, my art thrived, it was/is my escape.

Tragedies

Just when her acting career began to take shape, tragedy after another flew in. First, Brenda lost her dad then soon after she bid her mom goodbye.

Consequently, her relationship to Kenyan rapper, Juliani was rocky and the target for trolls with false reports clouding the actual truth.

I lost my dad when we began the shooting of KONA, my mom after that. During Disconnect and especially SUBIRA, my relationship was taking blow after blow, and a lot of misinformation was going round about it.

Escape route

Fortunate enough, acting became her bedrock, it helped her heal the wounds and overcome the baggage her personal life had.

Playing a character whose life was laid bare on a script and whose end result was certain, became a blessing in her life.

It was a blessing to be able to be someone else, whose life was laid down as words on a script, whose outcome was certain.

To cut the long story short, the budding actress admitted that artists are human too – they mourn, they make mistakes but a million plus eyes judge them instead.

Her plea being that: celebrities and personalities are not super-humans and the public should give them an easy time because behind the cameras, they battle a lot as well.

I think what I am trying to say is artists are human too, life happens to us, we love, we mourn, we make mistakes, and we do it all in front of a million and one eyes. This is very cliche to say, I know.

Closing off, she expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to use art and film as her escape route.
