Information about a gangster preacher planning a Kitui heist has surfaced

Additional information has surfaced regarding the pastor and worshipper involved in a violent robbery at Kavisuni market in Kitui, shedding light on their dual lives as religious figures and criminals.

The pastor, Ezekiel Muinde Mwangangi, was a well-known figure in the local community, serving as a preacher at Heaven City Chapel in the Soweto area of Kitui. Despite his religious role, Mwangangi and his unidentified accomplice harbored a darker agenda.

Last week, they executed a robbery at a wholesale shop owned by Muli Munyoki, posing as police officers investigating stolen goods. However, their true intentions were revealed when they robbed Munyoki at gunpoint.

The situation escalated when police officers from the nearby Kavisuni police station intervened. The robbers attempted to flee on a motorcycle but were confronted by law enforcement. Ignoring commands to surrender, they brandished weapons, resulting in Mwangangi being fatally shot while his accomplice escaped with gunshot wounds.

Further investigation unveiled the meticulous planning behind the robbery. Mwangangi, originally from Tiva village in the Kwa Vonza area, enlisted his accomplice to deceive a friend into lending them a motorcycle under false pretenses.

The revelation of Mwangangi’s involvement in criminal activities has shocked the local community. Kalimani chief Cyrus Kitwai Malombe, who confirmed Mwangangi’s leadership role in the Soweto church, expressed disbelief at the pastor’s double life.

The community, once familiar with Mwangangi’s religious engagements, is now grappling with the reality of his criminal behavior. The church had recently held a week-long crusade in Soweto Township, where Mwangangi actively participated.

According to Kitui County Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Eng Samuel Bett, the police were initially unaware of the robbers’ religious affiliations. The investigation has since progressed, with several individuals questioned, including the motorcycle owner, and members of the public providing crucial information.

Death in traffic accident of the sub-county police commander of Limuru

The police sub-county commander of Limuru, Philip Mwania, tragically lost his life in a road accident that occurred in his home county of Kitui on Friday night. Kitui County Commander Leah Kithei confirmed the incident, stating that the fatal accident took place at Nzeeu River along the Kitui-Mutomo road around 11:30 pm. The collision was a head-on impact between Mwania’s car and a lorry, resulting in his immediate demise.

Leah Kithei reported that the lorry driver emerged unharmed from the crash. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, prompting an ongoing investigation. It is presumed that the late police officer was en route to his rural home in the Nzambani sub-county, Kitui, for the weekend when the tragic incident occurred. Philip Mwania was alone in the vehicle.

The body of the deceased police officer has been transferred to the Kitui County referral hospital morgue for preservation. This unfortunate event adds to the rising number of fatal accidents in the country, exemplified by a recent collision between a bus and a fuel tanker in Busia that claimed two lives.

Concerns about road safety continue to grow, with a nationwide campaign underway to address the escalating menace. Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority indicate that road accidents have claimed 649 lives from January 1 to February 20, 2024, surpassing the 623 recorded during the same period in 2023.

Pedestrians account for the highest number of fatalities at 252, an increase from the 190 recorded in the previous year. Motorcyclists follow closely, recording 152 deaths, a slight decrease compared to the 177 in 2023. Passengers, drivers, and pillion passengers also contribute to the grim statistics. The NTSA has identified various causes of accidents, including losing control, untraced causes, and lane indiscipline. Efforts are ongoing to address these issues and enhance road safety nationwide.

Police officer arrested for raping woman at police station

On Sunday, a police officer in Kitui County’s Mutitu North Sub-County was detained for reportedly raping a woman who was being held in jail.

The police policeman is accused of snatching the suspect from the cells and sexually assaulting her in one of the office spaces.

The woman who was being held for the crime of malicious damage was allegedly raped in one of the station’s office spaces, according to the police.

When his fellow officer on duty, a constable, went to the bathroom and lingered too long, the cop did the horrible act.

When the officer’s wife entered the room and saw the cop and the suspect in the act, the incident took a dramatic turn.

The woman had visited the police station in an effort to find her husband, who had gone missing.

“She went to the report office but she did not find her husband. While there she heard two people conversing in one of the rooms and she identified her husband’s voice.”

When the door was forced open, the woman was horrified to see the officer and the female suspect both in their underwear.

Using a large stick, the woman attacked the female suspect and severely injured her.

The cop was arrested for the crime of rape while the victim was taken urgently to Mutitu Sub-County Hospital for treatment and evaluation.

The officer’s wife was also arrested for the assault charge, and the two are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, August 28, 2023.

Mozzart gifts Nuu community in Kitui with a fresh water point worth Ksh.3M

While substantial progress has been made in increasing access to clean drinking water, millions of people mostly in rural areas, still lack this basic need.

According to statistics worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also demonstrated the critical importance of sanitation, hygiene and adequate access to clean water for preventing and containing diseases.

It is with this in mind that Mozzart commissioned its eight water project in the Kyumbe Primary School in Wingemi Location, Kitui Country.

Mozzart has continued to show support to the people of Kenya through Social Responsibility and initiative “Action 100 Wells” which aims to deliver clean and safe drinking water to needy communities by drilling boreholes.

The head teacher, Mr Robert Wambua, thanked Mozzart for the gesture.

“Thank you Mozzart for what you have done. This is a very great resource for the people in this community. You have solved a big water problem that has been with us for years. We had pupils walking 25 kms with 5 litres of water everyday but that burden has now been relieved. The burden has also been lifted off the backs of the parents thanks to Mozzart,”

Area Chief Geoffrey Mutiango echoed Wambua’s sentiments.

“On behalf of people of Wingemi Location and parents at large I can’t express how these people feel. We want to say thank you on behalf of them. We have approximately of 80,000 people residing in this location and we will ensure this serves them all. We have suffered together and we are now going to enjoy together. This is good news to us and I want to also ensure that we will give this project maximum security it deserves for it to serve us for a very long time.”, he said.

Mozzart Marketing Manager Frank Ochieng urged the local leadership to ensure the project benefits as many people within the area as possible.

“This is the eighth borehole we have successfully commissioned and we are very proud and happy to support the Nuu community. Six out of the eight boreholes are powered by solar pumps to sort out the problem with electricity outages, but most importantly in areas not yet connected to the national electricity grid. Since Mozzart has enabled the water to come up, my humble plea to the area leadership in charge of water is to lobby to ensure the water is piped for it to reach many more residents of Nuu,” he said.

So far Mozzart has commissioned fresh water points in Munguini Secondary School in Maragua, Muranga County, Imbo Kothidha, Homabay County, Lurambi Primary School, Kakamega County, Chebunyo Dispensary, Bomet County and Katanga Secondary School.

Others include Machakos County, Murumba Market, Busia County, Kakili Primary School, Makueni County and now Kyumbe Primary School, Kitui County.

The total cost of this project at Nuu is Ksh 2,964,044.
