Court Orders Mackenzie & 94 Shakahola Suspects To Be Hospitalized

A Kenyan court has ordered the hospitalization of Paul Mackenzie, a controversial preacher and prime suspect in the Shakahola massacre, alongside 94 other individuals who have been on a hunger strike.

Court’s Decision

On February 20th, 2024, Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku issued orders following the prosecution’s plea to assess the health and nutritional status of the suspects. This decision aims to ensure their well-being despite their protest action.

ODPP’s Argument

The Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) argued that the suspects’ health condition demanded immediate attention, citing their right to proper nutrition and healthcare as outlined in Kenyan law. Principal Prosecution Counsel Alex Gituma and his colleagues emphasized the legal framework guaranteeing these rights.

“Mombasa Law courts Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku has today ordered that Shakahola key suspect Paul Mackenzie and 94 others be taken to hospital after staging a fresh hunger strike. Hon. Ithuku’s directive comes after an application by the prosecution seeking to have the accused persons examined by medical practitioners on their nutrition and health condition,” ODPP stated.

The prosecution informed the court in the same application that it is not in favor of the accused being released on bond because, having left their homes for Shakahola Forest, they pose a flight risk and would be difficult for the state to find if they were released.

The ODPP informed the court that if the suspects were proven guilty of the crimes, they would likely face harsh terms and flee the country.

“The prosecution further notes that Mackenzie and his co-accused are likely to interfere with key witnesses including children, whom they have immense control and influence over,” ODPP added.

Mackenzie and thirty others will have psychiatric examinations in the high court

Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and thirty other individuals have been directed by the Malindi High Court to undergo a mental assessment within 14 days before the commencement of their murder trial.

Mackenzie and his co-accused have been in custody, accused of orchestrating the Shakahola massacre. The suspects have been held in Shimo Latewa, Kilifi, and Malindi prisons during the ongoing investigations.

The pastor and his fellow accused are facing five charges and ten counts related to murder, torture, assault, slaughter, and terrorism.

High Court Judge Thade Mugure has mandated that the suspects undergo a 14-day psychiatric evaluation. The court has also ruled that a bail hearing will be postponed until the accused can enter a plea.

The suspects will appear before the Mombasa, Shanzu, and Tononoka courts for separate hearings, scheduled to commence on February 6th of this year.

This decision comes in the wake of a court warning that it might release the preacher, emphasizing the need to bring the prolonged legal process to a conclusion.

The head of the Good News International Ministries religious doctrine and his co-accused were apprehended in connection with the deaths of over four hundred people associated with the religious doctrine.

Mackenzie, however, is serving a one-year sentence for operating a television station and engaging in filming activities without proper licensing.

The massacre came to light in the early weeks of April when a man reported to the police that his wife and daughter, who had joined the ministry in Kilifi County, did not return. Subsequent investigations uncovered shallow graves and emaciated individuals.

As a result of these revelations, an inquiry was initiated, and the pastor was identified as the mastermind, with congregation members stating that he ordered them to starve themselves for ‘redemption.’ Investigations have been ongoing since then.

Controversial Preacher Paul Mackenzie Found Guilty

Controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie has been found guilty of possessing and distributing unclassified films and operating a filming studio without a valid license. This is the first case that the state has won against Mackenzie since his arrest six months ago.

The judge ordered a pre-sentence report to be filed before sentencing Mackenzie on December 1.

“One Paul Mackenzie has today been found guilty of being in possession and distributing films which have not been classified and operating a filming studio without a valid filming licence,” the statement read.

Under Kenyan law, it is illegal to distribute or exhibit any film that has not been examined and issued a certificate of approval. Mackenzie could face up to two years in prison or a fine of Sh7,000.

Mackenzie is also facing prosecution for the Shakahola massacre, in which over 400 people were killed in Kilifi County. The hearing in that case was adjourned on Thursday.

“Mackenzie’s lawyer, Wycliffe Makasembo, asked for more time to fine-tune his response to the state’s application to have his clients detained for 180 more days pending charges,” a statement from the ODPP said.

DPP Seeks Six-Month Detention For Controversial Preacher Paul Mackenzie

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has filed a fresh application seeking court orders to detain controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie and his co-suspects for six months (180 days). The DPP says this is necessary to allow the police to conclude investigations into the Shakahola massacre.

In a statement on Monday, September 18, 2023, the DPP said that investigations are ongoing and that DNA profiling of the 429 bodies exhumed from the Shakahola forest is a delicate and time-consuming process. Pathologists need at least an additional six months to complete the process and conclusively establish the true identity of the exhumed bodies.

The court has adjourned the hearing of the application to allow lawyers representing Mackenzie and his co-suspects to file their responses.

This is a significant development in the case against Mackenzie, who is facing charges of murder and terrorism related to the deaths of his followers in the Shakahola forest. If the court grants the DPP’s application, it will mean that Mackenzie and his co-suspects will be held in custody for another six months while investigations continue.

Cult leader Paul Mackenzie to be held in custody for 6 months

Kilifi controversial pastor Paul Mackenzi and 28 others will be detained for six more months pending their investigations and probation inquiry.

Mackenzi was first arrested on April 15, 2023, for allegedly telling his followers to starve themselves to death in order to “get to heaven faster”. He was also accused of using religion to brainwash members of his congregation, some of whom denounced education and getting health aid from hospitals.

The 29 of them were to know their verdict today, September 18, regarding the Shakahola massacre that led to the loss of more than 400 lives.

Since his arrest, more than 400 dead bodies of men, women, and even newly born babies have been exhumed from the Shakahola mass graves.

Mackenzie has spent more than four months in custody with the others getting arrested between May and June.

It is important to note that Mackenzi and the others are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The detention is a measure to ensure that they do not interfere with the ongoing investigations or pose a threat to the public.

The Shakahola massacre is a horrific tragedy, and the victims and their families deserve justice. The detention of Mackenzi and the others is a step towards bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Cult leader Mackenzie confesses his biggest sin

Paul Mackenzie, a contentious pastor, has claimed that eating is his biggest sin.

Mackenzie made the statement while sat in court with the other defendants, according to a video that The Star was permitted to view.

“Dhambi kubwa ninayoifanya duniani hivi leo mimi, ni kula. Lakini siku nitakapo okoka kutoka dhambi iyo ya kula, nitaishi na yesu milele.”

Mackenzie and his supporters went on a hunger strike from June 6 to June 10 in protest of their alleged mistreatment while detained.

However, they were accused of trying to commit suicide in court because they refused to eat.

Following the attack, one of the suspects passed away from complications and hunger.

The contentious pastor and his co-defendant have already spent more than 90 days behind bars.

Starting on August 2 of last week, Mackenzie and his 27 companions were detained for an extra 47 days.

Shakama Ranching Company Denies Selling Land to Paul Mackenzie

The Shakama Ranching Company Limited has denied selling land to cult leader Paul Makenzie. The company says that Makenzie never approached the directors about buying the ranch, and that they were not aware of any dealings where money exchanged hands.

The company’s attorney, Philip Kiaingi, told the Senate’s Adhoc Committee investigating the Shakahola killings that the directors were aware of the squatters’ encroachment on the property, but they were never aware of the activities taking place in the large field.

Kaingi said that the directors reported the invasion to the Lango Mbaya Police Station, but they did not receive assistance in evicting the squatters from the property.

The company bought the 100-acre property, but then sold 50,000 of those acres to the government. The enormous woodland acreage reportedly belongs to Makenzie in an amount of roughly 800 acres.

However, Kiaingi asserted that Makenzie might have fallen prey to an illegitimate transaction by squatters and other brokers.

The 50-share firm is currently in receivership after neglecting to reimburse a lawyer for legal services in the amount of Sh15 million.

Rhoda Maweu, wife of alleged cult leader Paul Mackenzi, released on Sh100,000 bond

Rhoda Maweu, the wife of alleged cult leader Paul Mackenzi, has been released on a Sh100,000 personal bond and an additional Sh500,000 surety.

Maweu had been in detention for 62 days since her arrest on May 2 in connection with the Shakahola deaths.

The Shanzu Magistrate Court ruled that the State had not presented enough evidence to justify her continued detention.

Maweu will be expected to appear at any police station when called upon.

Her husband, Mackenzi, and 16 other co-accused individuals will remain in custody for an additional 30 days.

They were arraigned between April 15 and May 2.

The court will review their case on July 27.

Here are some additional details:

  • Rhoda Maweu was arrested on May 2 in connection with the Shakahola deaths.
  • She was released on a Sh100,000 personal bond and an additional Sh500,000 surety.
  • She had been in detention for 62 days.
  • The State was unable to present enough evidence to justify her continued detention.
  • She will be expected to appear at any police station when called upon.
  • Her husband, Paul Mackenzi, and 16 other co-accused individuals will remain in custody for an additional 30 days.
  • They were arraigned between April 15 and May 2.

Government knew about Shakahola cult victim burials

A burial permit issued to one Evans Sirya on January 28, 2022 has revealed how Mackenzie was allowed to conduct burials for his murderous cult.

The burial permit, with serial number 1722406, bears the signature of the then Makongeni Sub Location Assistant Chief, Raymond Charo.

It seemed that you could get the burial permit after submitting a small letter explaining why you needed the permit and attaching a copy of your ID card.

In this case, Sylas Omondi Otieno had written a letter requesting a burial permit to bury his wife, Zilpha Adoyo Mwande.

Both Mr Otieno’s and Mrs Mwande’s national identity card numbers were listed in the letter and a copy of his card was attached.

On the same day, a burial permit was issued, stating: “Having duly ascertained the cause of death of the above deceased person, I hereby authorise the burial of the body,” and signed by Makongeni Sub-Location Assistant Chief Raymond on January 28, 2022.

However, Nation was able to trace the family of the deceased and Mrs Mwande’s mother was dead and had been buried over 15 months ago.

In an exclusive interview, Mrs Esther Anyango mentioned that she had no idea that her daughter had died or had even moved to Shakahola with her husband.

She had to travel from Kisumu to find out the truth.

After a thorough search of the house, she found the burial permit.

She is now seeking justice and does not know when she will see her son-in-law and grandchildren again.

Mackenzie lawyers run away from him and his case

Two lawyers representing cult leader Paul Mackenzie and 28 other suspects have requested to recuse themselves from the case, citing frustrations in trying to access the suspects and concerns about the fairness of the trial.

Lawyers George Kariuki and Elisha Komora said they have been unable to meet with their clients for several weeks, and that they have been threatened and harassed by unknown individuals. They also expressed concern that the suspects are being held in inhumane conditions, and that they may not receive a fair trial.

“With the challenges that the suspects are going through and the current circumstances, I feel my conscience is disturbed,” Kariuki said. “I am afraid that justice may not be served if I continue to represent them.”

The third lawyer representing the suspects, Wycliffe Makasembo, said he will continue to represent them. He said he believes that the suspects are being unfairly targeted by the government, and that he is committed to ensuring that they receive a fair trial.

“I feel there is an invisible hand trying to frustrate Mackenzie and others,” Makasembo said. “This hand is none other than the state. Personally, I will stick with Mackenzie and the others to death or when I will feel I have had enough and also run away.”

The case against Mackenzie and the other suspects is still in its early stages. It is unclear whether the court will grant the lawyers’ request to recuse themselves.

Interior CS: Paul Mackenzie a crafty terrorist who covered up crimes

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has revealed that controversial Malindi preacher Paul Mackenzie was a crafty man who went to great lengths to cover up his criminal activities within the expansive Shakahola Forest.

While appearing before the Senate Select Committee on Shakahola on Friday, the CS termed Mackenzie a terrorist who was deliberate in whatever he was doing.

“He avoided the use of technology and a lot of the money he had conned people was done in cash,” Kindiki said.

The preacher has been accused of brainwashing followers of his Good News International Church located in Kilifi County to sell their property and join the church.

He is said to have then persuaded them to starve to death on the belief that they would meet Jesus.

Those who changed their minds and wanted out were killed by armed criminals who were supervising the starvation, Kindiki told the senators.

“Some of the mass graves were covered with vegetation, and that is why our officers have to physically look for the graves,” Kindiki said.

So far, over 241 bodies have been exhumed from dozens of shallow graves within the 800-acre forest located within Chakama Ranch.

As of Thursday, May 25, at least 91 people had been rescued and 19 reunited with their families.

On the same day, ten more mass graves were discovered as Kindiki launched the second phase of the search for victims.

He said the government will open roads within the ranch to ease the search and rescue operation as it’s believed there are many more graves and people are still hiding in the forest.

“This operation will take a long time to conclude,” Kindiki told the lawmakers on Friday.

The revelation by the Interior CS has shocked many Kenyans, who had no idea of the extent of Mackenzie’s crimes. The government has been urged to bring Mackenzie to justice and ensure that no one else is harmed.

Armed bandits working for Mackenzie oversaw starvation at Shakahola-Kindiki

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has disclosed that followers of Pastor Paul Mackenzie who altered their opinions once they began to hunger were slain.

Kindiki claimed that Mackenzie had employed armed thugs to keep an eye on the starved followers.

The supervisors would either strike them with a blunt object or strangle them to death if they changed their minds, he claimed.

The CS informed senators that while the majority of victims perished from malnutrition, a sizeable portion also did so through blunt object injuries or a lack of oxygen.

On Friday, Kindiki testified before the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on the Proliferation of Religious Organizations.

Since the horrifying cultic events were discovered on April 14, around 241 remains have been retrieved from shallow graves in the woodland.

On the first 112 bodies, autopsies revealed that the majority of the victims had died from malnutrition.

Kindiki added that his officers have located further mass graves.

“Satellite photos have revealed more mass graves exist. Ten mass graves are certain to exist, he said.

He expressed certainty that all bodies would be found and that those who were still alive would be saved. When everything is finished, Kenyans will be informed, he claimed.

“We will tell Kenyans the magnitude, the numbers, and all they need to know,” he continued.

We are traumatised exhuming these bodies – Shakahola team says

It is 6am and the temperature in Shakahola township is approaching 27 degrees Celsius. Harry*, a local, is not bothered. For the last one month, he has been waking up at dawn and getting ready to head to Shakahola forest to help in the exhumation of bodies inside the forest.

In an exclusive interview with Nation Media Group, Harry reveals his first-hand experience.

“It is the first time for us locals to be part of such a traumatic exhumation exercise. We have never witnessed something like this,” says Harry.

Their day begins with a debrief from Homicide Director Martin Nyuguto, who is in charge of the exhumation operation.

Divided into three groups of 10 each, they are then dispatched to different sites where the graves have been previously marked. They have a daily target of exhuming at least 20 grave sites. He adds that they have been trained to carry out the job by forensic experts.

“Some parts are hard to dig, so we strategize. Other days, we hit the target early since you find one grave site with more than 10 bodies in it,” explains Harry.

He says they are paid Sh1,000 per day, which in his view is not commensurate with the work they are doing. They also want the government to fully employ them, saying that the team deserves decent-paying jobs.

“We ask that when any money comes out of the exercise, it should be given to our chairman. That way, it becomes easier for us to get hold of the funds donated,” says another digger.

The one month they have been at the crime scene has turned out to be a traumatic experience for them.

“At night, I find it hard to sleep. I see the bodies we have retrieved during the day in my dreams. We want counselling when the exercise is completed, but we are apprehensive that this might not happen,” says Harry.

He says Red Cross has offered them counselling as they conduct the exhumation, but they see it as unnecessary since the exercise is still ongoing.

So, how were they selected for the job? They say they had knowledge of where the grave sites might be located.

“We were friends with some of Mackenzie’s followers back then when they were still visiting the shopping centres, but when we got a tip that children were dying and being buried inside the forest, we mobilised ourselves and tried accessing the area. Unfortunately, our motorcycles were burnt down by the crooks in the cult,” says Tim*.

Yesterday, eight bodies were exhumed bringing the total deaths to 235. At the same time, four people— three females and one male adult—were rescued, with one of the females in critical condition. This brings the total number of those rescued to 89. There were no arrests.

Today, the Senate Ad hoc Committee on the Shakahola incident is expected to conduct a series of meetings in the area. It is trying to establish whether there were any security breaches in the area, which led to the deaths.

Pius Muiru reaps big from Shakahola and other cults!

Pius Muiru has seen a boon in attendance at his church, Maximum Miracle Centre Church immediately after the nation was shocked by the happenings at Shakahola. The death toll keeps increasing as more and more bodies are discovered and exhumed of Pastor Mackenzie’s followers (or should we call them victims?)

Add to that the fact that the government is also investigating Pastor Ezekiel Odero under suspicion of being a cult leader and now it is said the parameters of the investigation have expand to encompass illegal organ harvesting.

Whatever the case may be, Kenyans have been returning to the more tried and tested churches that have existed for long without sinking into scandals and Pius Muiru’s church is one such church.

Add to this the fact that desperate Kenyans are looking for a way to survive during these tough economic times and they are running back to church seeking divine intervention and you can understand why Pius Muiru is receiving more faithful than ever before. His son Andrew shared a video of just how jam-packed their church is:

Cult leader Mackenzie makes excuses as to why his wife and family werent starving

Paul Mackenzie, a suspected cult leader who lives in Kilifi, has acknowledged that his family was not fasting despite inquiries into claims that he brainwashed numerous people into starving to death.
More than 200 people were unearthed from Mackenzie’s Shakahola farm after he allegedly told them to starve so they could see their creator, prompting a probe into his whereabouts.
According to a Citizen TV report, Mackenzie claimed to the authorities that he did not make anyone starve to death and added that his family was not even observing the fast.

“There is no physical church anywhere in Shakahola. I bought the land and sold it to members, and some are yet clear payments,” he said.

The area chief was unavailable, according to Mackenzie, and he was unable to provide an exact count of the population in Shakahola.

Recently, the number of corpses excavated from Shakahola Forest topped 200, and detectives are still looking into the case.
After detectives exhumed 22 more bodies on Saturday, May 13, the total number of dead bodies surpassed 200. Many people in the neighbourhood have subsequently been traumatized by the dead’ discovery, and other families are still anxiously awaiting word about missing relatives.
Mackenzie was thought to have been active in the region for more than a decade. Still, a mass burial was only found in the woodland after the police began a serious inquiry.

Wacha watoto wakufe, tutazika – cult leader Paul Mackenzie

Cult leader Paul Mackenzie was recorded giving a sermon and his version of the gospel is what can only be described as shocking! He seems to be a very charismatic leader but his version of the teachings is perverse.

He was speaking to his congregants about the reasons they give for being unable to spread his gospel and specifically with them saying they are starving. And to him this is a garbage excuse to give for not going out to evangelise.

The cult leader, Paul Mackenzie was adamant about letting the children die and he declared that he would help bury them. He would help the parents dispose of the remains because Jesus’ work is more important than any earthly concerns such as starving children.

His conversation around children was so callous one can’t help but wonder whether or not he is a fully-fledged psychopath hellbent on creating as much destruction as he can or whether he is just a madman drunk on his own punch.

Ringtone supports of cult leader Paul Mackenzie

Gospel singer Ringtone has come out in support of beleaguered cult leader, Pastor Paul Mackenzie who is currently under arrest for leading his “flock” to the slaughter like the Judas sheep.

Ringtone attacks Diana B for “promoting prostitution”

Speaking in an interview with Nichola Kioko, he attempted to sanitise the man’s reputation by saying that all he did was ask his congregants to fast which is an activity that the Bible endorses.

He went on to say he is sure that everyone who has died due to fasting under Mackenzie’s tutelage have gone to heaven and Ringtone’s logic, the cult members showed a dedication to God.

Malindi cult: Police exhume 58 bodies

Malindi cult: Daddy Owen addresses church leaders cowardice

The true scope of the damage done by the cult is still being assessed and will be fully exposed once the police are through with their investigations. The cult leader, Paul Mackenzie is now in police custody and while most of his cult members are starving, he looks rather plump.

Ida Odinga was right, churches need to be reigned in

Remember when Ida Odinga was telling Kenyans that the government needs to step in and regulate churches because they had gone wild with insanity? Pepperidge Farms remember! (Google that reference). And Kenyans were quick to lampoon her as if she wasn’t right.

Now that a cult in Malindi has been exposed for preaching demonic madness and getting it’s members to starve in a bid to get to see Jesus, Kenyans are beginning to take note.

But what her husband’s political rivals did, you know, the guys who eventually took office, President Ruto and his deputy who is more suited to be a village chief than a national leader was to close ranks with the errant churches.

Churches have not only become a den of thieves and scammers but now they are harbouring charismatic psychopaths who are going out of their way to kill as many people as possible with a bastardized version of the gospel.

Now what’s left? It’s a bunch of families mourning the deaths of their loved ones who were both vulnerable and stupid enough to get absorbed into a cult and then we will act angry and the cycle repeats itself in the next few years.
