I’m Less Appreciated Because I Do ‘Undiluted’ Dancehall – AK Songstress

Ghanaian Danchall artiste, AK Songstress is undoubtedly one of the oldest female dancehall artistes in Ghana.

Notwithstanding, it seems only a little fraction of Ghanains know her and her songs.

In airing her views on this, AK explains that she’s less appreciated because she is in for pure dancehall music.

According to her, Ghanaians would rather embrace and appreciate artistes who claim to be dancehall acts, yet dilute the genre, than pure dancehall acts.

She is of the believe that she is less appreciated because she has stuck to the true dancehall genre throughout her career.

According to the ‘Overdose’ singer, most of the dancehall acts here in Ghana, alter the genre with other forms like Afrobeat. This she added unfortunately attracts the masses rather than the true genre.

“As a dancehall artiste, there is a way that your songs should sound. If we follow the right thing, as far as genre is concerned, I think the dancehall that we do [in Ghana], is not dancehall,” she asserted.

AK Songstress was peaking with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM.  “The people who have actually come out and are doing well as dancehall acts, are not doing dancehall. So they are confusing the people, and the actual thing the people don’t like. They want the one that is mixed up with some Afrobeat and all that,” she said.

The artiste, who is currently promoting her song, ‘37’, lamented her career has been relatively slow. This she said is because the society does not appreciate true dancehall.

“I have stuck to doing the actual thing, the right thing, for a very long time now and it seems that it is for a certain group of people,” bemoaned.
