We Won’t Legalise Homosexuality – Government

The government makes its stance known on the prevalent conversation.

The government says it has no intention to legalise same-sex relationship, This came hours after it came under pressure to make public its position on the matter.

Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid stated that homosexuality continues to be unacceptable. This is because there is no “cultural orientation” that supports it in Ghana.

Moreover, he admitted a society’s culture could change to reflect modern times. Therefore, at the moment same-sex relationship cannot be legalised.

The government’s position on same sex relationship is not different from that of the customs and traditions of Ghanaians.

The Information Minister made these statements on Joy News.

His Statement

“Since law is premised on customs, what it means is that we cannot make it legal at this stage. This is considering that the customs and traditions of the people abhor homosexuality,” Mr Hamid said.

A pressure group, Citizens for Truth and Accountability, Ghana (CITAG) has said the president’s comment was an indirect invitation to gay groups.

Finally, Mr Hamid said the government will not engage with any group on the issue of homosexuality. He reiterated that it is unacceptable to all citizens.
